Server
A server is the facility where websites are stored that are accessible over the internet through your computer. Individual user space on a server is created for every website that can be seen over the internet. For a site to remain globally visible it must remain on a server (or be "hosted").
Hosting
A website that is on a server is said to be being Hosted and therefore is said to be "live" (ie. globally visible). Therefore renewing your website hosting on a yearly basis keeps your site live and email functioning. more information on Hosting
ISP
An ISP or "Internet Service Provider" is just that, they are companies such as BT or Freeserve that offer and provide internet access to users.
Domain Names
A Domain Name or "URL" ( ) is the unique website address assigned to a given website. A company can have one or a number of Domain Names each pointing at different or the same address / website. more information on Domain Names
Email Forwarding
This is pointing or forwarding emails sent to a specific address to a separate email account. Therefore if you have a Domain Name with email set up to be "sales@yourdomainname.co.uk" emails sent to this address can be redirected to your existing personal email account ie. yourname@aol.com etc. more information on Email Forwarding
HTML
Hyper Text Mark-up Language or HTML for short is the programming language used to programme websites and can be seen as the suffix to every page of your website such as index.html or contacts.html etc.
Search Engines
Search Engines are websites such as Google or Yahoo that allow the user to search for specifics using "Key Words" and work on a cross reference basis of the Meta Tags within websites. more information on Search Engines / Registration and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
Meta Tags
Are the Key Word descriptions embedded in the code of a website which are linked to the content site and used to reflect a users search criteria through a Search Engine to enable that site to be found on a search for that area.
